CHAPTER 26

Danny Rose rented a tiny basement flat on the edge of Camden Town and when Kempner walked apprehensively down the stone steps to the heavy front door, he was wearing his best New York suit that he’d bought at Bloomingdale’s just before he crossed the pond. Single-breasted, light grey, with a plain white shirt and pastel blue tie. Danny responded to the doorbell almost immediately and Kempner was both surprised and disappointed to observe that she was in a pair of blue jeans, a pink Everlast boxer’s T-shirt and bare feet.

Stepping through the door brought him straight into the twelve by twelve sitting room with its two-seater floral-patterned sofa and one matching armchair, coffee table and TV. He’d been inside several times before, but only now did it strike him that this was a lonely person’s room.

“Come on, Danny,” he began. “Get your glad rags on. I’ve booked a table at ‘Les Tres Canards’ for eight o’clock.”

“Then you’d better pull the plug on it,” she replied, sitting herself down on the small sofa. “I’ve no intention of playing along with the romantic candlelit dinner scenario. You said you wanted to talk privately. We can do that here. There’s an opened bottle on the side there with a couple of glasses. Bring them over. I’ll get you some cheese and biscuits if you’re really hungry.”

“You’re a tough guy, aren’t you?” he smiled, pouring two glasses of wine and putting them on the coffee table as he sat opposite her in the hard, uncomfortable armchair. “How did the interview go?”

“Uniformed Inspector. Leeds Central. To start immediately after the Vance trial is over. I have until the end of this week to let Yelland know my decision.”

“OK. Best not to beat about the bush. I can sense you just want the facts,” he began, picking up his glass of red wine and tasting it. “It was a big move coming over to England. It was only because of Lauren that I made it. And it took me a long time and a lot of anguish before I accepted she really wouldn’t ever leave Albright. All the time that was happening, I was working alongside you. Attracted to you. But every time I got close, you put the barriers up because of Lauren. I was torn between New York and London and I was torn between Lauren and you. I was in a relationship with Lauren that had no direction, but I was in there up to my neck.”

Danny had tucked her legs under her on the sofa and was watching him closely, her glass of wine untouched on the table. She could sense that he was waiting to judge how his opening remarks had been received before he was prepared to venture further, so she gave it to him straight.

“I thought you said no bull,” she said harshly. So far you haven’t told me anything I didn’t know.”

“I don’t want you to go to Leeds. Stay in London. OK, you’re going to be an Inspector now.
